Here is the fun story about how I found my GMC.
A friend of mine that I race sailboats with, actually he races, my daughter and I follow everyone else around the marks pretending to be racing (we are getting better all the time). One night around the camp fire, I told my friend that I was tired of tent camping and was going to start looking for a old motorhome to buy and fix up. He told me to make sure I looked into the GMCs. That they had a great following and preceded to tell me about the rallies and the blacklist and some of the neat features that were built into these coaches that were way ahead of there time . Sounded good to me, kind of went in one ear and out the other.
Got home and did a little surfing and found some for sale, more than I wanted to pay for a 30+ year old motorhome. Most of the ones I saw were 10 to 20 grand (but they were cool). Still I was looking for a deal, and boy did I find one. A 1982 Tioga class c on a Dodge chassis. A little rough around the edges, but nothing I couldn’t fix with a little work and elbow grease. The fact that the speedometer quit working, and the alternator was not working on the drive home should have been a sign of what I was in for (I thought I could see the bad stuff). I have spent a year and a half working on replacing all the rotten wood and everything else that can rot or melt. It has left me on the side of the road three times, including a seized rear axle that required a huge flat bed truck and a huge tow bill, a seized water pump that caused a blown upper radiator hose. When that hose let loose it splashed hot coolant on my daughter in the cab. I have more but this is not the GMC. It has been a good learning experience. Time to move on.
So, I am setting in my office talking to a coworker complaining about my motor home and the latest problem I was having, he muttered under his breath ” You should have bought my motor home” Your motor home? What do have? A 1970 something GMC. Did you say GMC? Ya. I pulled up the photo site on my computer, found a photo of a TMZ and said “does it look like this?” Ya. He had very little info on it. He preceded to tell me a story of buying it off a guy in a bar because he needed the money and wanted it off his property. About a year later he had not moved the GMC and was not even sure it was still there. After a few weeks of prodding he took me out to where she was. Setting in the woods next to a bunch of other junk classic cars. See the photo to see what I found. She wasn’t exactly the diamond in the rough I was hopping to find, but she is rough. I started doing more research on the GMC and decided I wanted to bye this GMC from my friend. I told him to give me a fare price and I would bye it from him. He wasn’t in a hurry to sell it. Then one week he came into my office and said he needed some money for a wild weekend in Myrtle Beach and would sell me the GMC for what he had into it….. $500. I had to move it, and deal with the title, and he wanted the money before the weekend. DONE…….. So Thats how I got my very hurting Lady that I have big plans for.
Every guy at one time or another has dreamed about finding a his dream car in the back of a barn for little money. Well what I found was a new hobby and some real nice people. Thanks for the help so far.
